A large sancai-glazed pottery figure of a horse, Tang dynasty (AD 618-907)
Lot 1269. A large sancai-glazed pottery figure of a horse, Tang dynasty (AD 618-907); 19 in. (48.2 cm.) high. Estimate USD 10,000 - USD 12,000. Price realised USD 30,000. © Christie's Images Ltd 2013
The powerful horse is shown standing foursquare on a rectangular plinth with head turned slightly to the left and mouth open. The head is well detailed with slightly flared nostrils and expressive eyes set below a split forelock and pricked ears. The muscular neck is emphasized by the hogged mane. The unglazed saddle is set on top of a similarly unglazed blanket, and the trappings are glazed in amber, cream, and bright green glaze, which stand out against the amber-glazed body.
Provenance: Sotheby's New York, 15 June 1983, lot 199.
