Lot 1748. An impressive and rare jadeite and diamond pendant. Estimate: HK$13,000,000 - 18,000,000 / US$1,677,435-2,322,600. Courtesy Sotheby's.

The jadeite of brilliant emerald green colour and very good translucency, carved as a Laughing Buddha, decorated with brilliant-cut diamonds, mounted in 18 karat white gold. Laughing Buddha approximately 42.27 x 48.04 x 8.39mm.

Accompanied by Hong Kong Jade & Stone Laboratory certificate no. KJ 101997, dated 11 August 2020, stating that the jadeite is natural, known in the trade as "A Jade".

The Laughing Buddha

Maitreya is one of the Eight Great Bodhisattvas and an important part of Buddhist culture. Maitreya is perpetually smiling, through all worries past and present. His large belly represents endless empathy and the ability to resolve all human affairs. Because of these qualities, the figure is alternatively called the Happy Buddha, the Laughing Buddha, or the Lucky Buddha. According to the popular saying, “Maitreya approaches all things with a smile. There is nothing that his generous belly cannot contain; it encompasses heaven and earth.”

This natural jadeite piece has a deep green colour and a glistening, almost fluid texture, resembling the slow trickle from a clear spring. Like the surface of a placid lake, Maitreya is frozen in his laughter. The carving is exquisite, suffused with a glowing spirit and luminous quality that conveys Matreya’s pure understanding, optimism, and magnanimity. The head of this jadeite Maitreya has a diamond inlay, so his head appears to radiate light, just as the light of the Buddha illuminates all things.

In Chinese, the character for “luck” is a homophone for the character for “Buddha,” so images of Buddha carved in jadeite convey generations of good fortune, eternal luck and longevity. This piece represents deep cultural roots and it is undoubtedly a treasure to be passed down to future generations.
