Plate with a Pond and Ducks, Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), Wanli Period (1573-1620)
Plate with a Pond and Ducks, Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), Wanli Period (1573-1620). Porcelain with underglaze blue decoration (Jingdezhen ware), 5.7 x 28.9 cm. Philadelphia Museum of Art Bequest of Emmeline Reed Bedell for the Bradbury Bedell Memorial Collection, 1921-3-140.
Chinese porcelains were among the most important exports to Asian, Middle Eastern, and European countries during the Yuan and Ming dynasties. The decorative style of this dish is known as fuyode because it resembles the shape of the fuyo (hollyhock) flower with its petal-like medallions along the rim. The bottom of the dish usually depicts birds, flowers, and Chinese landscapes. The fuyode style was especially popular in Japan, where a large quantity of these dishes were imported.
