Takashi Wakamiya, Beetle container, lacquerware (Mokucho maki-e, raden, togidashi maki-e), 2013
©️ Takashi Wakamiya

This delightful lacquer container in the shape of a beetle is made by Japanese artist Takashi Wakamiya (born 1964), who practices traditional lacquerware techniques in the town of Wajima, known for lacquerware, where he grows and taps his own urushi trees for the sap that forms the lacquer.

The lifelike beetle opens as a box when the wing section of the insect’s back is lifted, revealing, in the cavity, an image of a grasshopper resting on a branch over shimmering water. The beetle’s head is also meticulously decorated with plants.
