An exceptional coloured diamond, rock crystal and mother-of-pearl clip brooch, by Wallace Chan. Photo Christie's Image Ltd 2007

Designed as a butterfly, the body set with a cushion-shaped fancy vivid yellow diamond weighing approximately 2.83 carats and vari-cut yellow to brown diamonds, to the butterfly specimen wings encased in carved rock crystal with mother-of-pearl back, enhanced by brilliant-cut yellow to brown diamond trim and accents, mounted in titanium, 6.5 x 10.5 cm; Signed Wallace Chan. Estimate HK$880,000 - HK$1,200,000. Price Realized: HK$1,087,500

With report no. 15034818 dated 23 May 2006 from the Gemological Institute of America stating that the 2.83 carat diamond is fancy vivid yellow, natural colour

The glittering butterflies, with specimen butterfly wings encased between luminescent materials are exquisitely sculpted jewels, expressive of art. These graceful insects are especially designed to capture fluidity, movement and changing light. The ethereal quality is a result of light entering and reflecting, light caught between pieces of rock crystal and mother-of-pearl. This phenomenon produces floating and dancing pools of light, emanating a shimmering radiance. It represents a talented endeavour to link the material and spiritual worlds. With these bejewelled butterflies, the artist-jeweller has created a magical realm that exists beyond time and space, a dreamy world where imagination reigns free.
