The tapering body is painted in brown slip on a white-slip ground under a clear glaze with two large shaped cartouches enclosing leafy flower sprays below a band of flower scroll on the high, rounded shoulder, Japanese wood box.
Provenance: Mayuyama, Tokyo, 1970s.
Note: Compare a similar Cizhou-type bowl, of approximately the same size (23 cm.), in the Peter Selinka Collection, illustrated in Chinesische Keramik: Meisterwerke aus Privatsammlungen, Cologne, 1988, p. 66, pl. 36, where it is dated Jin Dynasty.
