Provenance: Private collection, United States.
This previously misattributed painting by Artemisia Gentileschi, will be presented in Europe for the first time in centuries, having until recently been hidden in a private collection in the United States. The painting shows Artemisia's receptiveness to the artistic milieux in which she operated in the second half of the 1620s, and is an impressive example of her depictions of important female protagonists.
Recently the centrepiece of R+V's exhibition of pioneering women artists in New York, 'Ahead of Her Time', this previously unpublished Artemisia painting was re-discovered in 2021, and has since undergone significant scientific research, confirming its attribution to the master herself.
Offered by Robilant+Voena, with a proven track record of notable sales of paintings by female artists including Artemisia's 'Self-Portrait as Saint Catherine of Alexandria' to the National Gallery, London in 2018, this painting is an exciting addition to the oeuvre of the most famed and influential woman artist of the 17th century.
