Altar Vase with Design of Peony Scrolls and Sprays, Yuan dynasty, early 14th century. Longquan ware; porcelain with molded and incised decoration under celadon glaze; 72.4 x 33 cm, diameter of lip: 33 cm. Saint Louis Art Museum, Bequest of Samuel C. Davis, 942:1940.
With its fine net of crackle, the superb celadon color of this jar is in the native Chinese monochrome tradition. Foreign tastes, however, are evident in its meandering floral decoration, trumpet mouth, and grand scale. The robust Persian and Islamic design, adapted to Chinese style and then thickly covered in green, are barely contained by the glaze.
