Bowl, early 13th century, Iran, Kashan, Seljuq period of Iran (1037–1194). Fritware with luster-painted design. Overall: 9.8 x 21.5 cm. The Cleveland Museum of Art, Gift of the John Huntington Art and Polytechnic Trust 1915.585.
Fritware: Where fine clay was unavailable, potters made a paste out of ground quartz, clay, and glass. When fired, the paste created a compact white material called fritware that approximated the appearance of porcelain.
