NoteA closely-related pair of blue and white vases and covers of this form and decoration from the Royal Cabinet of Curiosities in the Rijksmuseum is illustrated in Chinese Ceramics in the Collection of the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, Christian J.A.Jorg, London, 1997, p. 91, no. 79. The author writes that the decoration probably illustrates scenes from Yang jia jiang yanji that may be translated as "The Command Troops of Yang Ye's family" by the Ming author Yong Damu. The present lot may be compared to the single blue and white square-section vase and cover sold at Christie's London, 17 May 2013, lot 1359.
