Lucas de Heere, Portrait of a Woman (said to be Lady Elizabeth Fitzgerald

Lucas de Heere (c.1534–1584) (attributed to), Portrait of a Woman (said to be Lady Elizabeth Fitzgerald, 1528?–1589, 'Fair Geraldine', wife of Edward Clinton), 1573. Oil on panel, H 46.8 x W 34.7 cm. Herbert Art Gallery & Museum (VA.1950.0003)

This painting was hanging in St Mary's Guildhall in 1817. It was once thought to be a portrait of Mary, Queen of Scots. We now think that it shows Lady Elizabeth Fitzgerald.

Lady Elizabeth was famous for her beauty when she was young – her nickname was 'Fair Geraldine'. She is wearing jewels which may have been looted from Spanish ships on the orders of her husband, Edward, Lord Clinton, who was High Admiral. He was a wealthy man who helped to pay for the rebuilding of Kenilworth Castle ready for a visit by Queen Elizabeth I in 1575.
