Hanging Representing Three Daoist Gods, Qing dynasty, early 18th century

Hanging Representing Three Daoist Gods, Qing dynasty, early 18th century. Silk, hanging scroll, embroidery. L.72 x W.36 in. The John R. Van Derlip Fund, 42.8.307 © Minneapolis Institute of Art

This embroidered silk panel, mounted as a hanging scroll, depicts three Daoist gods. Lu, the God of Wealth, stands in the center with Shou, the God of Longevity, on his left and Fu, the God of Happiness, on his right. The three attendants carry symbolic items: a ruyi scepter (symbolizing good fortune and happiness), a halberd and seal (symbolizing official position), and a piece of coral (symbolizing riches).
