Ikats : coats of countless colours
Central Asian silk ikats of the 19th century are amongst the most stunning textiles ever created. Using an elaborate tie-and-dye technique, they have a look that is curiously modern. They have become an inspiration for the people of Uzbekistan, as well for New York fashion designers.
A decade ago, little interest was shown in Central Asian ikats. Since then, they have been the subject of numerous exhibitions in venues as different as New York, Kuala Lumpur and Sydney. They have also come to occupy the most colourful end of the Islamic art spectrum. Within that field, these cloths are treated as a bold newcomer. ‘Vibrant' is the word that is inevitably used to describe these marvels of the weaver's art.
