A  pair of 19th century patinated bronze models of the Townley Vase

with elaborate twin scrolling handles with swans head terminals and ivy wreath cast flared necks, the ovoid bodies with classical figural frieze decoration on lotus and palmette circular pedestal bases, raised on later verde antico shallow square plinths, 39cm (15") high. -
Sold for £2,400 plus Premium and tax

Footnote: The handles of this vases bear similarities to a small number of designs for urns illustrated in Hope's 'Household Furniture and Interior Decoration' published in 1807. Plate XXXIV shows a design for an urn with similar handles which Hope states is similar to a Greek vase of white marble in the museum at Portici. The plate also shows decoration depicting a group of Apollo Citharaedus and Genius taken from a bas-relief in the British museum.
