Brussels Oriental Art Fait 2008: Renzo Freschi Oriental art
Male Head, Gandhara, 4th - 5th c., Terracotta, H. 23 cm (9'')
Durga, Central India, Medieval period - 10th century, Sandstone, H. 87 cm (34”)
This impressive female torso can be identified as Durga Mahishasuramardini. Her (missing) right leg is crushing Mahisha, the buffalo-demon, whilst she slays it with the trident on the (missing) right hand. The sculpture shows a strong, powerful movement. Even if fragmented, the figure gives the idea of the goddess’ supernatural power. Grain of stone, quality of carving and style of jewels are typical of the Chandella dynasty sculptures.
Buddha Head, Northern Thailand, Haripunjaya school, 12th-13th c., Sandstone, H. 18 cm (7'')
