A pair of blue-glazed square vases, cong, Guangxu six-character marks and of the period. Photo Bonhams.
Each modelled after the archaic jade prototype, the square section rising from a short circular foot to a short tapering neck, the rectangular sides applied with a pair of moulded elephant-head handles suspending fixed rings, covered overall in a thick and rich purplish-blue glaze, wood stands. 29cm (11½in) high (4). Estimate £4,000 - 6,000 (€4,900 - 7,300)
A very similar single blue-glazed cong vase, Guangxu mark and of the period, is illustrated in Treasures in the Royalty: The Official Kiln Porcelain of the Chinese Qing Dynasty, Shanghai, 2003, p.483.
