An impressive rubellite tourmaline, sapphire and diamond pendant necklace, by Carnet. Photo Christie's Image Ltd 2004

The pendant centering upon a carved rubellite tourmaline plaque, of Oriental design, within a sculpted pavé-set multi-colored sapphire and diamond surround, with a detachable link of similar design, to the sapphire and pink sapphire faceted bead tassel, suspended by a navy-colored silk cord necklace, enhanced by pavé-set multi-colored sapphire and diamond barrel links, mounted in platinum and 18k oxidized white gold, 25¼ ins., in a Carnet purple leather fitted case. Signed Carnet. Price Realized $71,700

Michelle Ong and her partner Avi Nagar first established their jewelry design business, Dorera, in 1985. Under this name, they were able to develop their design and technique, but in 1999, when they changed their name to Carnet, a unique style began to emerge. Ong's unusual designs fuse traditional Eastern and Western motifs in an innovative and artistic way. In this unusual pendant necklace, she skillfully combined a traditional Chinese dragon, carved in the large rubellite tourmaline, with modern pavé-set gemstone and oxidized gold trim. The carved plaque recalls the historic jades of China, but the choice of fuchsia-colored tourmaline gives the piece an unexpected twist.

Carnet recently opened a salon in Hong Kong in the chic Central shopping area. The glamorous store, designed by architect Richard Tuttle, is a perfect setting for Ong's sensual jewels. Her artistic talent and quality of craftsmanship are apparent in this unique jewel.
