A green-glazed stoneware jar, hu, Western Han dynasty. Estimate 3,000 — 4,000 USDPhoto Sotheby's.

of ovoid form rising to a cylindrical neck and flaring rim, the shoulder with three narrow grooved horizontal bands, set to either side with an incised double-loop handle terminating in an applied scroll motif above and fluted ring below, wave patterns incised along the neck and rim, the upper section of the body and interior rim covered with a translucent olive-green glaze, Japanese wood box. Height 12 1/2  in., 31.75 

A stoneware jar of similar form and decoration but of larger size, dated to the Han dynasty can be found in the Idemitsu Art Gallery illustrated in Chugoku ko-dai no bijitsu [Art of Ancient China]Tokyo, 1978, fig. 141. A similar jar of smaller dimension from a Japanese collection, acquired from Mayuyama in the 1960s, was sold in these rooms 19th March 2013, lot 19.
