Rare Rodin Recovered 25 Years After Theft

7

Auguste Rodin, Young Girl With Serpent.

A rare sculpture by Auguste Rodin was found a quarter-century after it was stolen in a $1-million heist from a Beverly Hills home.

A disgruntled housekeeper of an art collector had bragged about the home's contents at a local bar, eventually resulting in house keys being copied for a pair of thieves who paid the housekeeper $5,000.

The theives ransacked the house, taking works then worth about $1 million, including the bronze statue, Young Girl With Serpent, by Rodin, valued at $100,000. Also, still missing are an important early sketch of Rodin’s most famous work, The Kiss, and another sculpture, The Eternal Spring.

Beverly Hills police tracked down the housekeeper and arrested him in Miami, but he claimed not to know of the art's whereabouts.

The Rodin turned up at Christie's in 2011 and was scheduled for auction in London. Art Recovery International notified the auction house that the work was registered as stolen. Four years of negotiations ensued between the consignor and the Beverly Hills homeowner. Recently, the homeowner prevailed and will reportedly offer the work at auction later this year in a settlement with her insurer.
