Ewer, Ming dynasty, c. 1475 - c. 1525, blue and white porcelain, h 15.5cm × l 21cm. AK-RAK-1982-2. © Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam.

The bottom is unglazed reddish brown and burnt. The kendi has the shape of a crescent moon and stands on four little feet. The long neck is positioned at the center and ends in a spherical printed just below the mouth. On one of the sides of the kendi protrudes from a small nozzle. The umbrella -shaped crown of one of the points of the crescent moon was aborted. Decorated in underglaze blue with the bottom waves, clouds and flames. The upper side is decorated by flower tendrils.

This ewer’s form copies that of a leather waterskin. Chinese potters excelled in the imitation of artefacts in other materials. A small spout protruding from the side of the ewer could be used to serve its contents.
