A Longquan celadon ‘lotus’ bowl, Ming dynasty, early 15th century
Lot 3182. A Longquan celadon ‘lotus’ bowl, Ming dynasty, early 15th century, 7 3/8 in. (18.7 cm.) diam., Japanese wood box. Estimate HKD 300,000 - HKD 500,000 (USD 38,686 - USD 64,478). © Christie's Images Ltd 2017
The bowl has deep rounded sides rising to a flaring rim from a short foot ring, and it is finely carved to the interior with a lotus spray roundel encircled by a wide band of lotus borne on a dense floral scroll. The exterior is similarly carved above a key-fret band to the short foot, all covered with an even olive-green celadon glaze, with the exception of an unglazed circle on the base.
Note: The carved decoration on the bowl relates closely to designs found on contemporary blue and white bowls of the Xuande reign decorated with dense floral scrolls to the exterior and interior around a floral medallion.
Compare the present example with a carved Longquan bowl from the National Palace Museum Collection, illustrated in Green-Longquan Celadon of the Ming Dynasty, National Palace Museum, Taipei, 2009, p. 64, no. 25.
