A small Yaozhou celadon octagonal bracket-lobed dish, Song-Jin dynasty, 12th-13th century

A small Yaozhou celadon octagonal bracket-lobed dish, Song-Jin dynasty, 12th-13th century

Lot 1113. A small Yaozhou celadon octagonal bracket-lobed dish, Song-Jin dynasty, 12th-13th century, 4½ in. (11.5 cm.) across. Estimate USD 3,000 - USD 5,000Price realised USD 6,250© Christie's Images Ltd 2011

With shallow petal-molded sides rising to a correspondingly lobed and barbed rim, the center carved with a lotus leaf and flower, covered inside and out with a glaze of olive-green color ending in a circle around the broad unglazed base with small countersunk center, box.

NoteThe octagonal shape, size and carved lotus spray decoration of the present small dish can also be seen on a Dingyao dish dated to the Jin dynasty, 13th century, illustrated by M. Tregear, Song Ceramics, New York, 1982, p. 62, no. 45. Unlike the present dish, the sides are not lobed and the rim is not barbed. The two dishes are fine examples of the sharing of shapes, techniques and motifs at the various kilns during the Song and Jin dynasties.
