a) Seto-Kuro Chawan. Seto, Mino. White stoneware with black iron glaze (oni ita) discoloured by ash in the kiln. Therefore the piece was probably sorted out and deposited next to the kiln - the clearly visible crackling is typical for earth storage above the frost line. Low, cylindrical form (Hanzutsu), faceted with a knife (Hera) and the flat foot ring cut from the material. H. 8.3cm, Ø 10.4cm. Later wooden box (kiri bako).
b) Nanking incense box (kôgô) made of porcelain, painted with enamel colours in aka e style, slightly rubbed. Cube-shaped with recessed corners on a flat base. On the lid the kanji 'kai' (top), on the sides textile pattern. Old bag (shifuku) made of blue Kinran silk. Unusual cube-shaped box made of kiri wood with rounded corners, inscribed on paper strips: Gosu aka e shiho nyukaku kai kokin (Golden Scent Box, angular, painted red on top). H 2,5cm, 4 x 4cm. Condition A/B.
