The shallow dish is raised on a ring foot and is carved through the alternating black and red layers with a central motif of five small radiating mushroom-shaped spokes encircled by two rows of ruyi cloud scrolls, and on the exterior with xiangcao scroll, Japanese wood box.

NoteTixi lacquer dishes of this type were made in both black and red lacquer. A similar dish in red lacquer, of somewhat smaller size (16.1 cm.) is illustrated in the catalogue of the Tenth Anniversary Special Exhibition, Chugoku no Shik Kogei (Chinese Lacquer Art), Shoto Museum of Art, Tokyo, 17 September - 4 November 1991, p. 32, no. 26, where it is dated 15th century.
