the base inscribed with a fourteen-character inscription in two different seal scripts reading Jianchu liunian wuyue zao zizi sunsun yongbaoyong, translating to 'made in the 5th month of Jianchu 6th year (corresponding to 81 AD), to be treasured and for the eternal use of the sons and grandsons', wood stand.
Note: Compare a related bronze animal-form vessel of a similar style from the Song dynasty, inscribed to the underside with a six-character inscription in seal script, excavated in Huzhou city, Zhejiang province, now preserved in the collection of Huzhou City Museum, included in the exhibition Dynastic Renaissance.
