Stoneware dish decorated with incised scrolls on the cavetto and flowers on the bottom, covered with a green 'celadon' glaze, Ming dynasty, 14th century, Longquan kilns, Zhejiang. Diameter: 34 cm. Purchased from Robert Murdoch Smith, 1705-1876. ©️ Victoria and Albert Museum, London.

From the RICHARD collection, Iran.

The kilns in the area of Longquan in Zhejiang province (southern China) excelled in the production of a type of ware characterised by a greyish-white body and a green 'celadon' glaze. The surface is often decorated with incised, carved or moulded designs under the glaze.

Stoneware glazed vessels from Zhejiang formed the largest proportion of exports to the Middle East before 1400, but were also widely exported to the Philippines, Indonesia and mainland south-east Asia, where local potters emulated them. The first 'celadon' objects reached Europe from the Middle East; this dish was acquired in Syria.
