Celadon glazed elephant incense burner, Ming dynasty, Chenghua period (1466-1487)
Celadon glazed elephant incense burner, Ming dynasty, Chenghua period (1466-1487). Collection of the Imperial Kiln Museum, Jingdezhen, China.
The shape of the incense burner is modelled on a bronze gui from the Shang and Zhou periods, known as a gui style burner, which was used as an incense burner, and the elephant ears on either side suggest that the burner may have been fired for Buddhist rituals and offerings.
