Note: Willem de Monchy (1894-1964) was a major shipowner, board member of some of the foremost Dutch shipping and trade companies, and one of the driving forces behind the Holland-America Line, a firm started by his father, in the early 20th century. He had a seat on the advisory boards of the Museum Boijmans-van Beuningen and the Historisch Museum in Rotterdam. A large part of his extensive collection was donated to the former museum, including Breitner's The Earring and an important group of textiles. See also lots 61 and 102.
