Note: Vietnam was under Chinese rule for a thousand years until the establishment of the Ngô dynasty (939), the first unified dynasty in North Vietnam. Ash-glazed pottery, such as the offered vase, was produced under the influence of the Han dynasty. Covered with a vegetable ash glaze with a high iron oxide content which, during the reductive firing process, gives this soft greyish green colour, enhanced by those large, thicker, vitrified green drops. Although the form and production technique are the same as in Southern China, the glazed drop decoration is unique to Northern Vietnam.

Note: Lime pots were used to store powdered lime, one of the necessary ingredients for the practice of betel chewing. The shapes of these two lime pots presented in this sale are very popular. Directly Inspired by a Vietnamese legend, recounting the traditional origins of betel nut chewing, the design of the lime pot is meaningful, it incorporates three essential elements to betel nut chewing: the spherical or ovoid shape of the stone used to hold the lime (mixed with ground betel nut), the handle that becomes a betel palm (or betel nut), the source of the nut, and the betel nut vine that surrounds it. The betel nut and tendrils are moulded into the base of the handle and scattered over the spout of the pot.
