Based on the metalware prototype, the domed cover decorated with a pair of confronted butterflies, covered inside and out with a creamy white glaze over straight sides, the unglazed base carved with a single character guan.
Lot 96. A carved Yueyao celadon 'phoenix' box and cover, 10th century, 13.4cm diam (fitted box). Sold for US$12,800 (Estimate US$20,000-30,000). © Bonhams 2001-2025
Derived from a metalware prototype, the flat circular box supported on splayed foot, the gently domed cover carved with a phoenix in flight over an incised foliage ground, the border with concentric circles and 'feathered' stripes, covered inside and out a translucent olive-green glaze, the base with five long spur marks.
