Painted in a striking chinoiserie style, this exceptional charger presents a Chinese dignitary—seated atop a small elephant and holding a ceremonial flag—positioned between a flowering bush and a sheer cliff. The rim is adorned with five Chinese figures engaged in various pursuits, interspersed with three elegant birds, including one perched delicately on a blossoming prunus tree. The reverse is equally considered, with eight stylized Chinese emblems rendered within alternating panels.
The presence of the elephant—an enduring symbol of power and exotic wonder—speaks to Europe's centuries-long fascination with this majestic creature. From the Roman legions and medieval menageries to artistic renderings by Rembrandt, the elephant has consistently captivated the European imagination. In the realm of 17th-century Dutch Delftware, it became a powerful emblem of far-flung connections and aristocratic taste.
