Head of Bodhisattva, Tang dynasty (618-907), Tianlongshan Grottoes. Beige sandstone. Dimensions : 20 x 14 x 16 cm © Galerie Jacques Barrrere.
Provenance : Private collection of Doctor Pierre Thierrart, acquired in the 1960’s - 1970’s.
Carved from a rather friable sandstone, this head of bodhisattva unveils the typical characteristics of Tang statuary discovered in the Tianlongshan grottoes. The face, full and harmonious, uncovers somewhat idealised features. The eyes, depicted with fine incisions, are seemingly closed and unearth an intense sense of contemplation and great inner joy. The softened eyebrows crown a fine and well-carved nose. The mouth is small and pert, raised into a discreet smile. The hair is organised into fine braids, kept in place with a tiara.
