Stem Cup, Neolithic, Dawenkou culture (4300–2400 B.C.E.)

Stem Cup, Neolithic, Dawenkou culture (4300–2400 B.C.E.). Earthenware with burnished surface and cut decoration, 17.5 × 7.6 cm. Leonard C. Hanna, Jr., Class of 1913, Fund, 2000.74.1 © Yale University Art Gallery

Tall, elegant cups such as this one were probably intended for ritual use. They were produced by both the Dawenkou and the Longshan culture, which was also based in the Shandong Province and showed a preference for black pottery.
