Note: The Yuan dynasty witnessed unprecedented maritime and overland connections, with foreign artisans arriving in great numbers, and cultural exchange between China and abroad intensifying. In this context, new ceramic forms emerged, their shapes, decorations, and even intended markets all reflected a spirit of cultural fusion.
The present ewer is distinguished by its unique form, unmatched among surviving examples. For a related vessel, compare to the celebrated Yuan blue and white phoenix-head spout flask in the Capital Museum, Beijing, a work that ranks among the museum’s foremost treasures.
