A gilt bronze Buddhist figure from the 10th-11th century.
The ultimate masterpiece was the gilt bronze statue of a seated Buddhist figure as difficult to define iconographically as it was to place geographically. Christie's hesitated between China in the 10th-11th century, and the then non-Chinese area ruled by the dynasty known only through Chinese annals as the "Liao." The gilt bronze soared to $2.5 million, paid by Littleton & Hennessy of New York and London.
