MUNICH.- From 1827 onwards, Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld (Leipzig 1794-1872 Dresden) designed a number of murals for the new buildings of the Munich Residenz Palace initiated by Ludwig. After 1832 he worked on designs for the private rooms of Ludwig in the Royal Building Königsbau situated at what is today known as Max-Joseph-Platz. To mark the donation of a cartoon to the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung Munich the exhibition is showing the designs for the Cycle with Homer's Hymns to Demeter, Aphrodite and Hermes, which served as models for the King´s dining service room. Since the room was completely destroyed in the Second World War along with all its furniture and fittings, the drawings of Schnorr and his assistants are today the only witnesses to and at the same time typical examples of the generation of Nazarene art. The Staatliche Graphische Sammlung Munich provides a concentrated view of one of the details of Munich's history as a city of art - a city which is celebrating its 850th anniversary in 2008.
