NOTE: No certain prototype is known for this composition, but a version sold, London, Sotheby's, 28 November 1956, lot 29 (present whereabouts unknown), is considered by Ertz from photographs to possibly be from Jan Brueghel's own hand.¹ Another very similar composition to the present lot was sold, Amsterdam, Christie's, 11 May 1994, lot 170, as by Jan Breughel the Younger.
