Notes: Le groupe antique en marbre dont ce bronze s'inspire fut découvert en 1583 près de Porta San Giovanni à Rome. En juin de la même année, le groupe fut acheté par le Cardinal Ferdinand de Médicis, futur Grand-Duc de Toscane, et est conservé dans la Tribuna des Offices à Florence (Haskell et Penny, loc. cit.). Largement admiré, le groupe fut copié dans divers matériaux par un certain nombre d'artistes Européens. L'exemple offert ici est remarquable tant par sa finition parfaite que par sa surface extraordinaire.

The antique marble group upon which the present bronze is based was discovered in 1583 near Porta S. Giovanni, Rome. By June of that year the group had been purchased by Cardinal Ferdinando de'Medici, who was later to become Grand Duke of Tuscany, and it remains in the Tribuna of the Uffizi, Florence (Haskell and Penny, loc. cit.). Widely admired from the outset, the group was copied in a variety of materials by artists throughout Europe. The present example is notable for its beautifully finished details and superb surface.
