A scarab with a rider
A scarab with a rider, Etruscan, 5th cent. B.C. Photo Cahn Auktionen AG
L. 1.4 cm. Carnelian. Intaglio in the form of a scarab. On the underside a horse and rider surrounded by a frame enlivened by short dashes. The horseman is nude save for the helmet on his head. He holds a spear in his right hand and the reins in his left hand. The longitudinal drill hole indicates that the scarab was originally worn as a fingerring. Intact.
Provenance: Formerly Coll. Heinz Hoek, 1950's-1960's.
