Ewer, China, Wanli period, circa 1590-1610

Ewer, China, Wanli period, circa 1590-1610 (porcelain); The Netherlands, 19th century (silver mounts). Porcelain with silver mounts. Height 22 cm © Vanderven Oriental Art

The shape and decoration of this vessel point to manufacture for the Middle Eastern market, but curiously there are none of these shapes known in Eastern collections. The vessels were mainly imported into Europe, not for use but for display as exotic curiosities. This type of rare object, further embellished with silver mounts in Europe, would have fitted perfectly into a Renaissance and Baroque Kunstkammer. This type of object was furthermore often included in 17th century still-life paintings.

Provenance: H.O. Collection, UK, 2015; Vanderven Oriental Art 2001; Langhout, Han Collection, The Netherlands; Vanderven Oriental, 1980‘s
