Lot 82. A blue and white 'phoenix and dragon' double-vase and cover, early 20th century. Hauteur: 28 cm. (11 in.). Estimate EUR 10,000 - EUR 15,000. Price realised EUR 150,000. © Christie's Images Ltd 2018.
Provenance: Previously in a French private collection, acquired in the French art market in the 1960s-1970s, and thence by descent.
Note: Conjoined forms, incorporating sections of two or more shapes to create a single vessel, were a visual innovation widely propergated during the Yongzheng and the Qianlong reign. A smaller blue and white coupled vase with very similar archaistic dragon and phoenix motifs on the main body is in the collection of the National Palace Museum of Taipei.
