Chinese clothes sold at Bonhams Los Angeles, 17 – 26 June 2024

Lot 361. A group of three embroidered silk women's semi-formal vests, xiapei, 19th-20th century; 106.7cm, 96.5xm, 106.7cm long overall (3). Sold for US$7040. © Bonhams.

Comprising two vests applied with a 'silver pheasant' (fifth rank) badge; and one vest applied with a 'crane' (first rank) badge.

Provenance: Dr. Anke L. Nolting (d. 2022)
Dr. Anke L. Nolting served as the Associate Dean and Executive Director of Development and Alumni Relations at Columbia University's Vagelos College of Physicians & Surgeons. She was instrumental in establishing the Wu Family China Center for Health Initiatives, a collaborative venture between Columbia University and various medical institutions in China. Dr. Nolting maintained close relationships with Hong Kong entrepreneur Gordon Wu Ying-sheung and his wife Ivy Wu Kwok Sau-ping. The two robes in the present lot had been in Dr. Nolting's possession in her Upper West Side, Manhattan, apartment for over twenty years.
