NEW YORK, NY.- Christie’s celebrates Asian Art Week, a series of six auctions, three live and three online, taking place 12-27 March at Rockefeller Center. The live sales begin 18 March with Japanese and Korean Art, led by an Important White Porcelain Moon Jar of the Joseon Dynasty (estimate: $1,800,000-2,500,000). On 19 March, live sales continue with South Asian Modern + Contemporary Art, featuring a seminal 1954 painting by Maqbool Fida Husain Untitled (Gram Yatra) (estimate: $2,500,000-3,500,000) that has not been exhibited since it was purchased in India the year it was painted. The live sale series concludes 20-21 March with Important Chinese Furniture and Works of Art, which features furniture from two important private collections, including a magnificent and extremely rare 17th century huanghuali “Officials Hat” armchair (estimate: $800,000-1,200,000). Three online sales will complement the live auctions and all open for bidding 12 March: South Asian Modern + Contemporary Art Online, Indian, Himalayan and Southeast Asian Works of Art, and Arts of Asia Online, each offering a range of works attractive to new and seasoned collectors.

Japanese and Korean Art

The sale is led by a magnificent Moon Jar, as well as Katsushika Hokusai’s masterpiece, the Great Wave , and an important Heian period Dainichi Nyorai sculpture. The auction also features a fine selection of Goryeo dyansty celadon from the David and Nayda Utterberg Collection, examples of rare Joseon period porcelains, a beautiful painting by Ito Jakuchu and a curated selection of lacquer works, metalworks, modern and contemporary art, sculptures, ceramics and much more.

South Asian Modern + Contemporary Art

The sale is led by a selection of early works by members of the Progressive Artists’ Group and their associates, including a seminal formative painting by Maqbool Fida Husain from 1954, unexhibited since it was purchased in the year it was painted, Sayed Haider Raza’s iconic 1953 gouache, Black Sun, from the esteemed collection of Madame and Monsieur Jacques Lassaigne, and Akbar Padamsee’s monumental Untitled, a significant landscape from 1969 acquired more than 50 years ago by the pioneering collectors Bilwa and Lore Chowdhury. The sale also features important works by Francis Newton Souza, Krishnaji Howlaji Ara, Krishen Khanna, Zainul Abedin, Gulam Rasool Santosh, Zarina and Sudhir Patwardhan. Other highlights include a group of works by the forerunners of modernism in South Asia, including Jamini Roy, Walter Langhammer and George Keyt and the itinerant American artist Edwin Lord Weeks. Celebrating the legacy of the Baroda Group of artists and the Faculty of Fine Arts at Maharaja Sayajirao University are paintings, works on paper, prints and sculptures by Bhupen Khakhar, K.G. Subramanyan, Jeram Patel, Sankho Chowdhury and Gulammohammed Sheikh from various collections, including that of the visionary architect B.V. Doshi and his family.

Important Chinese Furniture and Works of Art
20 – 21 March 2025

Two extraordinary private collections of Chinese furniture take center stage, Ming/Modern: Classical Chinese Furniture from a Distinguished Family Collection, and superb huanghuali and zitan furniture from an important American private collection. Highlights include a magnificent and extremely rare huanghuali ‘official’s hat’ armchair dated to the 17th century and a rare twelve-panel huanghuali folding screen, dated 17th-18th century. The sale also features an exceptional selection of Ming and Qing ceramics, including a magnificent Qianlong mark-and-period (1736-1795) blue and white and iron-red ‘dragon’ dish, a very rare and exceptional Yongzheng mark-and-period (1723-1735) famille rose ‘daylily’ cup, and a large and rare blue and white ‘chrysanthemum’ dish from the Yongle period (1403-1425). Additional highlights include archaic bronze ritual vessels, imperial jade carvings, and works from private collections including ceramics and works of art from Centuries of Taste: A Legacy of a Private Collection; early Chinese jades and works of art from the Collection of Dr. Ralph C. Marcove; a selection of Chinese ceramics from the Xiao Ming Lou Collection; a group of fine ceramics from the collection of Mineo Hata; and ceramics from a distinguished Japanese collection acquired from Mayuyama & Co., Ltd., between 1940-1990.

Indian, Himalayan and Southeast Asian Works of Art
12 - 26 March 2025

This season’s sale brings together a superb selection of Indian, Himalayan and Southeast Asian Works of Art. Headlining the sale is a large and well-provenanced Tibetan gilt bronze figure of Maitreya. Additional highlights include a large painting of Buddha Shakyamuni from Xumi Fushou, a rare post-Gupta period image of Buddha, a variety of fine Indian miniature paintings and a published group of Gandharan sculpture.
