Kevin Best, Still Life after Cézanne

The earliest Dutch still life paintings were executed from a high perspective, as time went on they moved from the point-of-view of a person standing to a person sitting. It must have taken them weeks or months to paint one, so it would have been a lot easier to sit.

Like me, Cezanne took a long time to set up a scene, but the brush strokes were quick and bold. Consequently, many are from a standing perspective which gives them quite a flat geometric look, reminiscent of the Japanese woodblock prints that were taking the art world by storm at that time. The Ginger jar, a favorite motif of Cezanne may be a nod to that. (Kevin Best)
