Bronze 'Crest' mirror, Eastern Zhou dynasty, 4th th century BCE. Diameter 7.9 cm; weight 82 g. Catalog 40 © 2026 Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Ancient Bronze Mirrors
The pattern depicts an imaginary beast's face viewed from the front, with eyes, horns, and fangs arranged in a swirling pattern. The Taotie, described in the 3rd century BC *Lüshi Chunqiu* as having "a head but no body, which devours people but inflicts harm before swallowing them," is not clearly depicted on this mirror.
