The reverse is decorated with a narrative of Prince Qi playing the pipe to draw a phoenix. According to legend, Prince Qi was skilled at playing the pipe, producing the call of a phoenix, and after retreating to Mount Song to practise alchemy, he attained immortality. This was a popular theme in the Tang Dynasty.
