Lot No: 397. Meiji metalwork. A bronze vase By Naokatsu, Meiji Period
The copper-red body cast in relief to depict the smooth ripples of a river formed by three carp swimming just beneath the surface, the eyes inlaid in gilt with dark pupils, the body signed Naokatsu koku with seal, the base with seal mark, with separate wood stand and tomobako. 23cm (9in) high. Lot No: 396. Meiji metalwork. A bronze figure of a rakkan by Akaboshi Hachizaemon, mid Edo Period, dated 1653
Finely cast, seated serenely with his left leg folded beneath the body as he leans slightly forward clasping his raised knee with both hands, the reverse engraved with a lengthy inscription Hojyu zo rakkan sonzo ittai i bungo shu Kyota no san.....Ganshu..Miyoei Shoo ninen Mizunoto mi nigatsu kichi jitsu, Jyuko Akaboshi Hachizaemon Nagazaki Koun zenji Jyujiso Shoundai (a sacred image of rakkan, cast as a reverential gift to the Gods, for... in Bungo (present day Oita in Kyushu), donated by Myoei to the Koun Zen temple in Nagasaki, dated Shoo 2 (1653), cast by Akaboshi Hachizaemon. 22.5cm (8¾in) high.- Estimate: £7,000 - 9,000, €10,000 - 13,000

Lot No: 398. Meiji metalwork. A large bronze vase by Oshima Joun (1858-1940)
Of bulbous form with short everted neck and spreading foot, cast in low relief with clouds and in high relief with a dragon, signed Joun saku. 37.5cm (14¾in) high. - Estimate: £800 - 1,000, €1,100 - 1,400

Another vase with an almost identical design was exhibited by Malcolm Fairley, London in Flowers of the Chisel, no.24. That vase was a presentation in 1935, indicating the date by which it had been made. For biographical details see Meiji no Takara, the Nasser D. Lot No: 404. Meiji metalwork. A bronze vase by Yoshimitsu, Meiji/Taisho Period
Of double gourd form, leaning slightly to one side, applied with a grasshopper in brass, copper and shakudo crawling over surface, the rim mounted with silver, signed Yoshimitsu. 30.5cm (11¾in) high.- Estimate: £4,500 - 5,500, €6,500 - 7,900

Lot No: 409^. Meiji metalwork. A pair of russet iron articulated lobsters by Yasuchika and Myochin, Meiji Period
Each naturalistically rendered with fully articulated legs, tail and antennae, respectively signed Yasuchika and Myochin. Each approx. 39cm (15 3/8in) long. (2). - Estimate: £1,400 - 1,800, €2,000 - 2,600
