JAILLOT, CHARLES HUBERT ALEXIS. & SANSON D'ABBEVILLE, NICOLAS. Atlas Nouveau. Contenant toutes les parties du Monde. Paris: Hubert Jaillot, 1692-93.
3 volumes. Illustrated with hand-colored engraved architectural title, engraved table of maps with large hand-colored vignettes, 94 (of 100) engraved maps hand-colored in outline, most of which are folding, and engraved tables throughout. Folio (628 x 501 mm). Period full speckled brown calf, covers with double gilt-ruled panel, spine in 9 compartments, three of which with gilt-lettered reddish-brown labels. Wanting 6 maps and 3 tables, light offset from maps, oxidation from early color, a few brief areas of light stains, colored table and a few maps with creases, a few leaves toned, but generally internally clean and attractive, covers with light general wear, spines and joints somewhat rubbed, a few stains, but attractive.
Jaillot joined the sons of Sanson in the production of this atlas, which first appeared in 1681 (but with less than half the number of maps here). Jaillot had the late elder Sanson’s maps redrawn on a larger scale and with fresh embellishments on the finest paper. Maps of other cartographer’s frequently appear bound in this work; this copy contains Herman Moll’s A New Map Containing The Towns, Gentlemens’ Houses, Villages, and other Remarks Round London, which isn’t called for in the table. Tooley, Maps and Map-Makers, pp 40-41.
