A white-glazed washer, Ming dynasty, mark and period of Zhengde.

circulaire en forme de corolle de fleur, le contour haut et évasé, recouverte uniformément d'une riche glaçure blanche, marque en kaishu Zhengde à quatre caractères dans un double cercle en bleu sous couverte sous la base. diam. 19.3cm, 7 5/8 in. Estimé: 40,000—60,000 EUR

CATALOGUE NOTE: Two Zhengde washers of this form and glaze, in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, are included in the Minji meihin zuroku, vol. II, Tokyo, 1977, pl. 104, and the Monochrome Ware of the Ming Dynasty, Book II, Hong Kong, 1968, pl. 1. Compare also a washer of this type, in the Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities, Stockholm, illustrated in Jan Wirgin, Chinese Ceramics from the Axel and Nora Lundgren Bequest, Stockholm, 1978, pl. 40a, no. 44. Another Zhengde white-glazed brushwasher from the Eumorfopoulos, Cunliffe and T. Y. Chao collections was sold in our London rooms, 30th May 1940, lot 315, and in Hong Kong, 20th May 1980, lot 60, and again, 19th May 1987, lot 251.

A washer of this form is illustrated in the sixth Guwan tu (Pictorial Scroll of Antiquities), of the Imperial Collection of the Yongzheng emperor, dated to the sixth year of his reign, equivalent to A. D. 1728, given by the Empress Dowager Cixi to Colonel A. H. Moorhead, I.M.S., sold in our London room, 19th May 1939, lot 62, and now in the Percival David Foundation, London.
