the pentalobed stepped base rising to a tall narrow stem interspersed with wood and ivory knops and florettes, a flared scalloped element rising to a gadrooned wood cup, the conforming gadrooned lid with ivory band underneath and similarly formed ivory and wood knop surmounted by an artichoke-form finial; the whole decorated with small circular ivory bosses, with an indistinct number in ink below foot: "560?." height 12 1/2 in. 31.8 cm  Estimate 30,000-50,000 USD

the scalloped circular base with openwork band around the foot, a ring of acanthus leaves surrounding the stem, turned with a wide flaring spiral around the central post, a ring of six petals above, the stem rising to a gadrooned knop underneath a turned ebony disc forming the drip pan with another gadrooned knop above, surmounted by the narrow nozzle with wavy horizontal banding. The underside of the foot with two blue-bordered inventory labels, one with handwritten "2626," concealing other earlier inventory labels, the other with "47." height 9 1/8 in.  23.2 cm - Estimate 35,000-45,000 USD

NOTE:The 1740 inventory of the Kunstkammer of the Margravate Baden-Baden, drawn up for Margrave Ludwig Georg (1702-1762), lists the present candlestick as: Ein von helfenbein gewunden gedreheter leuchter mit einem schwartzen bletle. It appears again in a 1772 inventory of Kunstkammer items transferred from Baden-Baden to the house Baden-Durlach as number 146. Two paper labels bear numbers representing the inventories of 1883 ("2626") and 1919 ("47"). the scalloped circular conical base beneath a ring of bulbously flared foliate strapwork, the stem centered upon a hollow spherical knop, the lower register of the cup gadrooned with a flaring ridge, the cup tapering flaring slightly, the domed conforming cover with scalloped rim, all decorated with shallow basketweave design and surmounted by a spiraling finial of stacked discs supporting a low, footed basin with beaded rim. height 15 1/8 in.  38.4 cm  - Estimate 20,000-30,000 USD

NOTE: The present cup compares well with two pieces in the Royal Danish Kunstkammer at Rosenborg Castle in Copenhagen, with shallow basketweave surface decoration, scalloped edges, and bulbous scrolling openwork elements (Maurice 1985, p. 88 no. 104, and p. 90 no. 107). The first is recorded in an 18th century inventory as the work of Lorenz Spengler, and the second is impressively embellished with elephant's heads and a figural finial depicting Pan and Syrinx, and is signed and dated:  The present cup compares well with two pieces in the Royal Danish Kunstkammer at Rosenborg Castle in notable as the 37th birthday of Frederick V of Denmark, whom Spengler instructed in the art of turning.
